The Dog A Day Sketchbook

Sketching is so important. I have gazillions of half-filled sketchbooks around the house, none completely filled. And they are so addictive to buy! And they are SO important to use-! Ack! Well at the art store last week- perusing the aisles for SOMETHING to buy, because God forbid you leave the art store empty handed- I found the perfect sketchbook (again). It’s plain black, but opens nicely and lays flat. It doesn’t have rings, so the pages won’t come un-hooked. I was looking for tinted pages and these were white, but oh well… you don’t always get what you want. It was pretty close to perfect. I bought it.

I’ve decided to use this sketchbook for a different purpose than usual. Instead of having it an open-ended commitment, I’m sketching A Dog A Day. 110 pages, so 110 sketches of Cliffie and Jack. I think it will be a great way to exercise my visual and hand/eye skills plus draw what I love most… my puppies!! And there is a commitment to it… A Dog a Day. Not a Dog a Week. Or 1-2 Dogs a Month. This will be great practice for me!

One of my favorite sketchbooks from my younger days is my Dog Sketchbook. I’ll have to scan a few pics from it. It was totally made up of my three dogs… Rudy, Ginger, Nelson, with little blurbs next to each pic. It’s been many years since those pups walked this earth but looking through that sketchbook makes me smile and remember. I like that. I like that a lot.

Above is the first sketch to adorn the book. It came out surprisingly well, considering I was standing at the edge of the bed balancing the book in my arm while trying to draw, and trying to do if FAST before anyone shifted position. Cliff is a little taller than Jack, so the proportions between them are off, but everything else came out okay. Sunday’s and Yesterday’s sketches didn’t come out so well LOL! Trying to draw fast without any erasing can be a bear.

I hope to post more of these, maybe a few a week. It will be a fun project!

Sketches

Just a few sketches from last month… I’ve been remiss in getting them up. All done from life, which can be a pain with wiggly greyhounds!

Cliffy laying on his bed

Another Cliff. I can't believe he sat up and posed for me for so long!

Jack working on a bone. He was very fidgety as he rolled it around, trying to get all the meat off. Hard to draw...

Much easier to draw then greyhounds, because they don't move around! LOL. Daylillies from the Boondocks.

Sketching is great art practice and I have been trying to do it regularly. My art prof in college always said you should do it DAILY- that’s tough work- but once or twice a week I can do!
